ITR-3 & ITR-4 Deadline Extended to August 31, 2026: What Non-Audit Taxpayers Need to Know

ITR-3 and ITR-4 Deadline Extended to August 31, 2026

If you file ITR-3 or ITR-4 and your accounts are not subject to a tax audit, you just got breathing room. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the filing deadline for FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27) from July 31, 2026 to August 31, 2026. Here is exactly what changed, who it applies to, and what to do before the new date arrives.

Who Gets the Extra Month

The extension applies to non-audit taxpayers filing ITR-3 (business/professional income) or ITR-4 (presumptive taxation under Sections 44AD, 44ADA, and 44AE). In practice, that covers most small business owners, freelancers, consultants, doctors, lawyers, and other professionals whose accounts do not require a statutory audit.

If your business crosses the turnover thresholds that trigger a tax audit under Section 44AB, this extension does not apply to you — audit cases continue to follow their own separate due date (typically October 31).

Why CBDT Extended It

CBDT cited the complexity of return preparation, reconciliation of financial data, and the general compliance burden on non-audit filers as the reason for the extra month. It is a recognition that many small taxpayers were still working through data reconciliation as the original July 31 deadline approached.

What This Means in Practice

  • Already filed before July 31? Nothing changes — your return stands as filed and there is no need to refile.
  • Filing between now and August 31? You are on time. No late fee under Section 234F, no interest under Section 234A for the extension period.
  • Miss August 31? A belated return is still possible until December 31, 2026, but it comes with a late fee of up to ₹5,000 (₹1,000 if total income is below ₹5 lakh), interest on any unpaid tax, and you lose the right to carry forward most business losses.

Do Not Wait Until the Last Week

Extensions have a habit of turning a one-month cushion into a last-week scramble. Before you file, make sure you have reconciled bank statements against books, matched Form 26AS and AIS/TIS entries against your reported income, and decided between the old and new tax regimes based on which one actually lowers your liability this year — not just which one you used last year.

If you are a presumptive taxpayer under Section 44AD or 44ADA, double-check that your declared income still meets the minimum percentage of turnover required to stay eligible for presumptive taxation, since a shortfall can force a full books-of-accounts filing instead.

A Quick Pre-Filing Checklist

  • Bank statements reconciled with books of account for the full FY 2025-26 period
  • Form 26AS, AIS, and TIS cross-checked against reported income and TDS credits
  • GST turnover (if registered) matched against income reported in the return
  • Old vs new regime comparison run on actual numbers, not assumptions
  • Advance tax and self-assessment tax challans on hand for accurate reporting

An extended deadline is relief, not a reason to delay reconciliation. The taxpayers who struggle in the last week are usually the ones who treated the extension as a excuse to start later, not as extra time to file more accurately.
